Ohio native, Gail Joley took weekly art lessons at the Toledo Museum of Art while growing up. She studied art in high school and college. When preparing to be an elementary teacher, she took courses in drawing, sculpture, art methods and art history. Gail later studied watercolor in St. Louis and Columbia, MO, and frequented art museums through travel in the US, Europe, Asia, and South America. After her career as a teacher, university professor and Dean of the College of Education at Indiana State University, Gail returned to watercolor. She studied for 5 years with award-winning artist, Bruce Chandler, and has taken workshops with nationally acclaimed watercolorists, including Don Andrews, Lynda English, Carolyn Grosse Gawarecki, Margaret Hoybach, Mark Mehaffey, Rose Metz, Joe Miller, Jerry Raedeke, Mel Stabin and Mary Whyte.
Gail is a Past-President of the Georgetown County Watercolor Society, having served for two years, and also served as VP for two years. She has achieved the following:
*Gail's painting 'Calm After the Storm', a watercolor batik on rice paper, was awarded 'Best of Show' in the Georgetown County Watercolor Society's Member's Show in January 2020.
*Served for 5 years as a Regional Director on the board of directors for the South Carolina Watermedia Society.
*Is a member of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild.
*Gail’s painting, ’Shrimpboat Reflections’ was juried into the South Carolina Watermedia Society’s 2009 Annual Exhibit.
*Gail won ‘Best of Show’ in the Winyah Arts Association Annual Exhibit at the Georgetown Rice Museum in 2006, and was an award-winner at WAA in 2008 and 2010.
*was an award-winner at the Berkeley Artist Guild’s Old Santee Canal Fine Arts Exhibition in 2007 and 2013.
*was juried into the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Annual Exhibit at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2015 thru 2023.
*Was an award-winner Georgetown County Watercolor society's Annual Members' Show at the Georgetown Rice Museum, in 2013 and 2015.
*Her paintings hang in private collections and homes in at least 14 states and Paris, France.
*Gail's original paintings and prints are available at Island Art Gallery, 10744 Ocean Blvd., Pawleys Island, SC 29585, (843) 314-0298. Located in the Island Shops with the red roofs, across from Bistro 217 and Rustic Table Restaurants. Her works can also be seen at Grey Man Gallery and Seaside Framing in Pawleys Island.
